As Internet Marketers, people are frequently telling us their site is either good or bad based on their Alexa rankings. Is this a fair assessment of a website?

How does the Alexa Ranking work then?

Alexa rankings are determined mainly by the number of visitors to your website that have installed the Alexa toolbar. This immediately points to a glaringly obvious issue: if you have 100 unique visitors to your site per day but only 2 of these visits have the toolbar installed, then your websites ranking will be much poorer than it should realistically be. For a full explanation of exactly how Alexa determines a ranking, see this excellent postAlexa_logo

A further issue with Alexa rankings is that the toolbar is only available for IE (Internet Explorer), Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. It does not track mobile traffic or Safari, which on many sites represents a significant portion of their traffic. So you are essentially basing your assessment on your site on a very biased, limited data segment.

And Google PageRank – How does it compare?

Google PageRank is a very different kettle of fish. PageRank is one the factors that Google assess when determining where to rank a site in search results. Therefore, if you are embarking on search engine optimization, it is important to check your PageRank. The algorithm for PageRank is extreme;y complicated and will not be discussed here. However, it is important to point out that PageRank is determined almost exclusively by how many other webpages link through to that webpage. PageRank aims to be a measure of how relevant a page is, not how much traffic a site generates.

Google-logoSo how do you determine whether a site is “good” or “bad”.  Well, that is easy – does it fulfill the function it was created for? If you have an eCommerce site, are you selling stuff? If it is a marketing site, are you generating leads? If the answer is no, your site is bad. If the answer is yes, then it is good. It is really as simple as that. Every site can be improved in some way, shape and form and no website will ever be perfect. The reason for this is that the Internet is constantly changing and evolving, therefore so should your digital web properties, including your website.
